What is conscious sedation?
Conscious sedation is altering the level of consciousness so that the individual feels no pain and has no recollection of the procedure. This can be achieved with drugs given orally or intra-venously (IV). Oral sedatiton involves taking a safe dose of the drug orally and the procedure is started after waiting a specific period of time. IV sedation involves the drug being given into a vein. The effect is immediate.
Conscious sedation is different from general anesthesia which is usually performed in a hospital setting. During general anesthesia the patient is unconscious and a tube is inserted into the windpipe to facilitate breathing.
All the options will be presented to you and we can decide on the best option for you based on your unique situation.
Should I choose oral or IV sedation?
Oral sedation is adequate for some procedures that are less involved and if the patient has a lower level of anxiety. IV sedation is recommended when the patient is more anxious and for procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions.
How long does the sedation last?
The effects of sedation last for a few hours after the procedure is complete. You are advised not to drive or do anything that requires mental concentration. It is recommended that you have someone with at home with you after the procedure for 24 hours.
