BEFORE INTRAVENOUS SEDATION
-
Sedation causes sleepiness, takes away anxiety and memory of the procedure.
-
A responsible adult will have to bring you to the appointment, and take you home. Your ride must come into the office and they must stay on the premises for the duration of the appointment. If you arrive on the day of the procedure unaccompanied, the procedure will not be performed.
-
It is important to inform us of any past and present medical conditions, allergies, hospitalization, medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal or alternative medications or recreational drugs you may be taking now or have taken in the past. Please inform us if you suffer from glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, or sleep apnea. Also inform us if you are pregnant, if there is a chance you may be pregnant or if you are breast-feeding.
-
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING for the 6 HOURS BEFORE your procedure. HOWEVER, DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF for more then 6 hours. Inform Dr. Nair if there is any reason you cannot starve yourself for the required 6 hours Example: Diabetes.
-
If you take routine oral medications, please check with us prior to your surgical date for instructions
-
Do not smoke or drink alcohol, grapefruit juice and stimulants such as coffee for at least 12 hours before and after the procedure.
-
Do not wear the following to the appointment: nail polish, false nails, contact lenses, make up, lipstick.
-
Please wear a short sleeve shirt to the appointment as we may need access to your arms for IV sedation and blood pressure.
-
Nitrous oxide may cause female patients to have dreams of a sexual nature. We would like to assure our female patients that a female assistant will be with you in the room at all times.
-
Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or make important decisions for 36 hours after the procedure. You will not be covered by ICBC if you are driving & are involved in an accident.
-
Children should be kept away from areas or situations where there is potential for them to harm themselves.
AFTER DENTISTRY UNDER SEDATION
You are recommended not to operate machinery, drive or do anything that requires motor co-ordination for atleast 3 days. This is because the drugs used to sedate you are different from the drugs used to sedate someone for a shorter surgical procedure and could linger in your system.
You may need to come back to see us to adjust your bite as this is hard to do when some one is sedated.
If you have any pain or discomfort please do not hesitate to call us.
